The music department engages pupils through a wide and varied curriculum, using a variety of different skills, instruments and resources. All pupils have access to our ICT music suite, Recording Studio and two class sets of keyboards, which are used both in lessons and during extra-curricular activities. Pupils are offered free one to one instrumental lessons on a variety of instruments such as: strings, brass, woodwind, piano and guitar.
The music department runs a variety of extra-curricular activities including; choir, orchestra, steel pan drum group, samba group, keyboard club, recording studio sessions and the academy’s yearly musical. We regularly perform in school and in the wider community.
In Key Stage 3, pupils study Music for one lesson a week, and across the key stage cover a range of topics including:
- Melodic notation
- African Drumming
- Caribbean Music
- The Blues
- Music for stage and screen
- Samba Music
In each topic pupils develop their performance skills/ Keyboard work and composing skills
When pupils choose their options at the end of Key Stage 3 we offer the following successful qualifications:
- BTEC Level 1/2 First Award in Music
- BTEC Level 1 in Performing Arts
