PE develops students’ competence and confidence to participate in a range of physical activities that become a central part of their lives both in and out of school. The PE curriculum at Ormiston Sir Stanley Matthews Academy allows all students to enjoy and succeed in many kinds of physical activities.
The PE Department offer a wide range of extra-curricular activities including breakfast, lunch and after school clubs. We also attend numerous sporting trips to watch elite levels of a variety of sports, where pupils who have regularly attended the clubs will be allowed to go on the trips free of charge.
We also take pupils to Spain during May half term to take part in Outdoor Adventure Activities including Water Sports.
The PE Department has a strong link with the ‘Youth Sport Trust’ and has recently been awarded the ‘Silver Partner Award’. The department has a key focus to bring out the best in all pupils in a physical, social and mental way during PE lessons. Working with the Youth Sport Trust the department are currently delivering the ‘My Personal Best’ initiative, where pupils are taught key life skills in their PE lessons.
The department has had an excellent 2 years with academic results (GCSE – 100% A-C, BTEC Sport – 97% A-C 2015/ GCSE – 100% A-C, BTEC Sport – 96% 2016) and has had equal success on the sport field by winning 21 trophies in the past two years. This success was split between the boys and girls in a variety of sports.
The PE Department annually holds an internal Sports Day in the summer.
P.E. lessons at the academy are of a consistently good standard throughout the year, where lessons have a strong element of learning incorporated with a fun aspect.
In core PE, students are offered a wide range of individual and team activities making use of our outstanding facilities. During these activities they are given the opportunity to plan, perform, evaluate, make decisions and lead others.
GCSE PE and BTEC Sport
In year 9 pupils can extend their knowledge in Physical Education by opting to take either GCSE PE or BTEC Sport.
The PE Department currently has a Year 12 and Year 13 class studying BTEC Sport Level 3 Diploma.
100% Pass rate 2016.
If pupils forget their PE kit they will be required to borrow full kit and take part in lessons.
– If they refuse to borrow they will be given a warning and then sent to the RTL if they still refuse to cooperate. Pupils will still receive a 10 minute detention for forgetting their kit.
– Pupils who have a note will still be required to borrow kit if they have not brought in their own kit because the note will excuse them from the ‘physical‘ aspect of the lesson and not scoring or officiating.
