Back in June 2018, we were successful in an application for some funding from the Siobhan Dowd Trust. We were awarded £500 to spend on new books for the LRC. Part of the funding agreement was that the students choose the books themselves from a local bookshop. This way the students get to choose what they want to read and we get to support a local independent business.
We recently attended The Bookshop in Leek, Staffordshire for our Bookshop Spree. We took ten Year 10 students to choose the books for our LRC. The students that we took were reading mentors who read with students from Years 7-9 every Tuesday. This was a lovely way of rewarding their dedication.
A big thank you to Bruce and the staff from The Bookshop for welcoming us into the shop. It was a wonderful book shop and so nice to see an example of an independent book shop still thriving in the high street. The students had a wonderful time selecting the books that not only they wanted to read, but what they thought the students that they mentored would want to read also.
And finally, a big thank you to the Siobhan Dowd Trust for giving us this opportunity to refresh our library with new books. We are so very grateful.
