Five Year 9 OSSMA students have been given the wonderful, once in a lifetime opportunity to sail a round trip from Gosport to Cherbourg, then back to Southampton with the Ocean Youth Trust South.
As part of a project ran in conjunction with Ormiston Trust, it gives Ormiston Students the chance to sail the yacht with inspirational adult mentors, not only to learn sailing skills, but also to help to increase confidence, self esteem and life skills.
The OSSMA boys teamed up with five students from Ormiston Meridian Academy and set sail on Sunday 12th May for their 5 day expedition around the Isle of Wight, then onto France and back.
Over the last 5 months, the students from both academy’s have been preparing for their journey by taking part in team building exercises and group work, helping to build their bond prior to their journey.
On board, the students will be actively involved in every aspect of sailing the boat, from hoisting and lowering sails, steering, navigation, anchoring, cooking and keeping watch.
