National Saturday Club

Posted on: July 8, 2020

The National Saturday Club at Staffordshire University is now recruiting Year 10 Uni Connect Club members for 2020/21

We are offering free access to the Staffordshire University Art & Design or Science & Engineering Saturday Club to your students as we begin our recruitment for the 2020/21 academic year. The programme gives Y10 students the unique opportunity to engage with subjects they love for free on Saturday mornings.

“My daughter has made good friends, had fantastic experiences and has grown socially, emotionally, and academically as a result of the Saturday Club.” – A Parent

“Saturday Club? Well, it’s the highlight of the week, isn’t it?” Club member, aged 14

The National Saturday Club is a UK-wide network run by the Saturday Club Trust, supported by Arts Council England and the Department for Education. There are over 70 Saturday Clubs across the UK with over 1,600 club members – your students could access this opportunity next year:

This year the Saturday Clubs at Staffordshire University will have a ‘blended learning’ approach.

We will be offering a ‘Virtual Club’ which will be a mixture of webinars and demonstration videos for 10 weeks on Saturdays from October to December 2020. These club members will receive some basic materials (free of charge!) at the start of the club, to enable them to fully take part in the webinar sessions each week. These equipment packs will be delivered to the club members school.

We will also be offering our full club which we are calling ‘Virtual and Live’. To ensure that we meet safety guidelines set out by the Government and Staffordshire University during this pandemic, we will be running the club for 10 weeks on a virtual basis until Christmas. In January we hope to welcome the club members onto our campus and teach them face to face in small groups. This club runs for 30 weeks.  There will be a large equipment pack supplied to any student applying to the ‘Virtual and Live’ clubs, with a collection date for the kits from the university campus in September. Again these kits are totally free of charge!

As well as the weekly classes the full club members will also take part in national network events including inspirational Masterclasses with leading figures from UK industry (when this is possible given current guidelines) and exhibit their work in the National Saturday Club Summer Show at Somerset House, London.

The Club costs are generously covered by Higher Horizons+ and activities are provided in line with their safeguarding, equal opportunity and health and safety policies.

As this unique programme is a Higher Horizons+ funded programme, it is a completely free opportunity for your Uni Connect students. We may be able to accept a small number of applications from non-Uni Connect students for the clubs this year, but need to offer the places in the first instance to our targeted learners.

It is open to all abilities and will help to build skills and confidence as well as demonstrate pathways to further study and careers. There are only limited places available at each club, so we will be selecting club members from their application and teacher’s recommendations.

For more information, or if parents have any questions about the club, please contact Lucy Harding, Lucy.Harding@staffs.ac.uk or 07825844967
