Ormiston Sir Stanley Matthews Academy Celebrates Best Ever GCSE Results

Posted on: August 22, 2019

Staff, students and Governors at Ormiston Sir Stanley Matthews Academy, are today celebrating their best ever GCSE results since the introduction of the new challenging grading system. More students than ever have achieved a Grade 5 pass in mathematics and English and have made significantly higher progress than students nationally.

Overall, 44% of pupils were awarded a Grade 5 or above, defined by the Government as a “strong pass,” in English and mathematics, and 69% of students at the academy achieved a Grade 4 or above in both subjects. Both results are considerable improvements on last year’s figures and consolidate the consistently high performance of the Academy since its opening.

Some of the individual student successes include:

  • Subandi Thennakoon – who achieved seven Grade 9’s including Maths, English Literature, English Language, Double Science, History and RS. She also achieved two Grade 8’s in Art and Sociology.
  • Kelsey Smith – who achieved four Grade 9’s in English Language, English Literature, RS and Sociology and four Grade 8’s in Maths, Double Science and Geography.
  • Amanda Jayawardana – who achieved two grade 9’s in Science and Italian, and five Grade 8’s in Maths, Science, Geography, English Literature and Sociology.

Mark Stanyer, Executive Principal at OSSMA, said:

“OSSMA is a family community and we would like to congratulate every student who collected their results today. This is the culmination of 5 years of hard work and commitment by all students and staff. They thoroughly deserve the successes that they have achieved and we are so proud of the hard work and commitment they have demonstrated.

We wish all of our students the very best of luck for the future, whether it be in further education or training.”

OSSMA is an Ofsted-rated ‘Good’ school with ‘Outstanding’ Personal Development, Behaviour and Welfare, and is committed to continuing to improve opportunities for its students.
