May I take this opportunity to update you on some changes in the academy, as well as a few reminders.
As you may be aware, the Prime Minister announced this week the latest stages of the roadmap out of Covid restrictions, and schools and academies have been issued with new guidance. From Monday 17th May, students will no longer be required to wear a face mask anywhere in the academy, but we strongly encourage students to continue with this element of protection, and we will support those who wish to continue to wear a face mask. In addition, adults will not be required to wear face masks in classrooms but will continue to do so in communal areas where they cannot safely distance themselves from other people. All other safety measures remain in place.
In March I wrote to you regarding the proposed plan to build a seven-classroom block at the back of the sports hall. This consultation has now closed, and I will write to you in due course regarding the outcomes and the next steps in the process. I am pleased to announce that the academy has also agreed with Chartwells, our catering contractor, to build an extension to the Bistro, which will nearly double the capacity. This will be completed for the students’ return in September.
The next two weeks are vital for our current Year 11 students as they complete their final internal assessments, which will help form their teacher accessed grades. Although these aren’t quite the same as the GCSEs of the previous years, they are still important, and I would ask all parents of Year 11 students to ensure their children are preparing for these assessments, but also to be mindful of their mental health. This has been a challenging year for all students, but especially those preparing for exams. I wish them well in their efforts.
I am pleased to tell you that the Government is continuing its Winter Covid Grant Scheme. This means that we will be able to provide vouchers to the parents of all students in receipt of free school meals or EHC plans. These will be distributed in the same way as in previous holidays.
May I also ask that the correct uniform is worn until the end of the year. Please ensure that haircuts are in line with academy expectations, skirts have the OSSMA waistband, and trousers are the black school trousers. All these details are outlined in our uniform policy, which can be found at https://bit.ly/3eLpSNJ.
If you need any help with or face any uniform issues, please contact your child’s Head of Year.
If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact the academy.
My best wishes to you and your family.
Mr. N Brennan
